âYou think sheâs guilty?â Detective Romero sat down in the swivel rocker next to me, and we watched Kelsey pick her jacket up off the chaise and throw it over her shoulder, then head out the side gate.
âI donât know,â I said, âbut from the way you talked to her, I suspect you do.â
âI talk to a lot of people a lot of ways. Doesnât mean I think theyâre guilty.â
âI should hope not.â I couldnât shake the thought of my conversation with him yesterday. âAnd if that means you no longer think of me as a suspect, then Iââ
âYou can stop right there, Misty. If my questions about Laceyâs murder bothered you yesterday, I apologize. Far as Iâm concerned, youâre not a suspect. You donât appear to have a motive. You didnât know Lacey, and the night of the murder you and your landlady were out to dinner together. Petite Trois. New restaurant in the valley. Have to try it myself sometime. It any good?â
I was stunned. âHow did you know that?â
âIâm a detective. I wouldnât be doing my job if I didnât. But if it will make you feel any better, Denise told me. After you kicked us out yesterday we had coffee. The woman likes to chat.â
Of course, Denise would tell him. She probably would have given him her life story if asked. And with the least little bit of prodding, shared enough information about me to make him wonder. Goodness knows I had enough.
âIs there anything else youâve discovered about me that youâve found interesting?â I asked.
If Romero knew anything, he knew Misty Dawn was an alias, that my real name was Agnes Butters, and Iâd come to the Golden State back in the sixties in my VW Van, selling love potions that didnât exactly mesh with the laws of the land back then.
âNot that Iâm willing to share.â Romero winked. ââLeast not now. But the restaurant? Any good?â
âYes, Detective, it was good. Excellent in fact.â
âGood to know,â Romero said.
âNow that Iâm no longer a suspect, whatâs next? Do you plan to ask for my help?â
âI do. Iâll admit itâs a stretch for me, since Iâm a skeptic when it comes to all this psychic stuff. But, be that as it may, you appear to know these people. Zoey seems to trust you, and I could benefit from whatever it is you want to call it, your insight, maybe.â
âWhat is it youâd like to know?â
âLetâs start with Kelsey. You get any kind of read on her?â
âIf youâre wondering if I think Kelsey killed Lacey, I couldnât tell you. She was nervous and frightened when she saw you. But then why wouldnât she be? She didnât expect to find you here. As a psychic, I can sense if someoneâs upset or nervous, but anything more Iâd have to have time alone to read them. Otherwise, itâs just too general. And I couldnât read her if she didnât want me to. No psychic could. Itâs impossible to read someone who doesnât want to be read.
